The Appalachian Trail crosses the Grassy Balds of the Roan Mountain Highlands on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. In this image the white trail blaze marks the way over Jane Bald at an elevation of nearly 5,807 feet.
The rock in the image is Cranberry Gneiss which is the oldest type of metamorphic rock known and was formed over a billion years ago from ancient ocean sediments. The mountains themselves were formed between 200 million and 400 million years ago during the Appalachian orogeny, when the North American and African plates collided, thrusting the rock upward.
