Into the Night
East Broad Top Railroad is building up steam and heading into the night.
On the right side of the image is the future Master Mechanic’s Office, built in 1867 as a farm homestead. In 1873 that farm became the EBT's Rockhill Yard and the homestead housed the EBT's general offices.
Out of service for 67 years, the 2-8-2 Mikado steam locomotive began operating again in 2023.
No. 16 was one of the last engines to operate for the EBT when it was closed in 1956. It’s one of the three largest and heaviest engines on the roster (Nos. 16-18), all of which use superheated steam and piston valves. Three earlier, lighter engines, Nos. 12, 14 and 15 use older slide-valve technology.
#12 in the distance was the first Mikdado (2-8-2) locomotive at East Broad Top and was made by Baldwin in 1911.
