I hiked the Appalachian Trail across the Grayson Highlands in the predawn hours of an autumn day so I could be in position to photograph the wild ponies that graze near Rhododendron Gap. I found the herd and photographed this young pony just as he was bathed in the light of the rising sun...The Grayson Highlands are in southwest Virginia. The ponies graze on the mile-high open balds near the Virginia Horse and Appalachian Trails..
