Safety First in the Nevada Northern Shop
#81 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1917 for the Nevada Northern Railway. She is a consolidation steam engine that is designed with a 2-8-0-wheel arrangement.
She operated as both a freight and passenger train between Ely and Cobre for more than three decades until retiring in 1951. After being retired, #81 was donated to the White Pine Public Museum (which later became the Nevada Northern Railway Museum) in Ely.
As part of the restoration process, #81 was repainted to look like she originally did, including her distinctive green boiler jacket. Today, #81 takes special excursion trips around Nevada’s Steptoe Valley and gives railroad fans the chance to celebrate the endless magic of the time when a steam locomotive was the epitome of technological advancement.
